Tory Burch is a name you probably know, but know very little about the woman behind the empire. Burch is a self-made billionaire. Okay okay, she does come from a wealthy family and her Dad did date Grace Kelly, but give a girl a break.
She majoring in art history at the University of Pennsylvania, and moved quickly into the fashion sphere in New York working for top companies such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vera Wang, and Polo Ralph Lauren among others.
She began her first label in 2004 and launched it with a retail store in NYC. Most of the inventory sold out on the first day. Yeah.
In 2005, Oprah Winfrey called her the next big thing in fashion on her TV, and obviously things blew up from there. Her clothes and accessories often appeared on TV shows like Gossip Girl and were (and still are hugely popular). She now has 160 stores, and is stocked in 3,000 department stores worldwide.
She was ranked #17 on Forbes 2015 list of America’s self-made women. From starting the business to becoming a billionaire in less than a decade is pretty much unheard of outside the tech industry. She’s built a successful brand and engineered an entire business with a background in art history and fashion PR. Show’s you can do anything you set your mind to.
Keep building that orange-doored empire girl.
