I REALLY want to go to CES (consumer electronics show). It’s basically a huge expo in Vegas show casing all the new tech that companies have been developing over the past year. It’s so big that it’s housed in 3 locations. About 170,000 people attend, and 20,000 new products are launched. To put that in perspective, there are only 150,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas.
Unfortunately, I am not important enough nor have enough money to attend. So for now, I’ve been following it on all the blogs and twitter feeds I can find to see what this years best tech was. Here’s my round-up (from other people’s round-ups…).
A big focus this year was huge Chinese tech companies such as Huawei and Hisense trying to make a name for themselves. There were also A LOT of drones, VR and the introduction of the 8K TV.
VR
VR was everywhere this year (read more about it here), and I think the entertainment industry is going to be all about the VR over the next 5-10 years. The Occulus Rift ($599) has now been released and everyone bloody wants it (myself included). Samsung also launched its own VR headset this year, so we’ll see how that pans out.
Virtual Reality Workout
This looks SO fun.
“Icaros is a virtual reality flying machine that lets you soar through imaginary worlds while getting a pretty good workout” – Gadgette
I would take this over SoulCycle any day. You might look a bit stupid, but if you’re flying about like a bird, and getting a workout, who’s the one laughing really?
Read a great article about it here.
Eye-projector headphones
Super weird and it kind of freaks me out that it projects straight into your eyes, but also feels like we’re living in the future so I give it a thumbs up.
Cars
Driverless cars, super speedy electric cars. You name it, they were displaying it. People are really embracing a future with automated personal transport, and I can’t wait.
Drone-copter
Although there is a max fly time of 26 minutes, this is still awesome. I imagine that they are working on that battery time as we speak to extend it to at least an hour. Think solutions to film and photography, and also just general messing around your garden. Disclaimer, its actually called the EHang184, but Dronecopter sounds way cooler.
Kube Sound
Louder than a rock concert, and hold 2 cases of beer, what more do you need for your summer picnic or tailgating party??
LG 8K Television
We’ve only just gotten 4K, and here are LG giving us 8K. You know when you look back at photos you took on your iPhone 3G and you’re like this is super low quality and grainy?? This is what the 8K TV is going to make everything look like from now on. Despite the fact there are only 200 films actually available in 4K, the 8K is consumer ready.
