Is ‘Virtual Reality Porn’ the future of a $14billion industry?

It seems like what was once technology only for Sci-Fi movies is now going to be creeping into our everyday lives. Virtual reality is another technology buzzword that has been bouncing around for a while now (much like drones, wearables and holograms) but it’s starting to feel like a reality.

It has been estimated that by 2025, VR porn will be a $1billion business, and a huge subsection of the overarching porn industry. This means that it is expected to be the 3rd largest virtual reality sector, coming in after gaming ($1.4billion) and NFL-related content ($1.23billion). It’s been dubbed at the next ‘mega tech theme’, drawing comparisons in technology leaps and uptake with the mobile industry in the 1990s.

“ At first, this will be similar to a ‘choose your own adventure’ type of experience. We already have these options for DVDs and movies with alternate ‘endings’ depending on what the viewer chooses, so we are looking forward to integrating those features into VR.” – Rebecca Bolen at SugarDVD

At this year’s SXSW, Brian Shuster, a tech entrepreneur (who helped to pioneer Internet Ads back in the 90s) has said he is currently working on an Oculus (the big dogs in VR) compatible virtual porn software.

Personally, I think that gaming is the first place we will see virtual reality used on a widely commercial basis, and it could be a while before its used as a standard in the porn industry. Early adopters keen to try it out will of course get their hands on it, but I think it may be a while before every teenage boy has one in their bedroom (which is probably a good thing – we don’t really need any more unrealistic expectations of sex going on now do we?).
